@mwl @jzb While I have a boycott on USA made products, I do not have a boycott on #MWL books. I know the author and buy directly, avoiding 'the machine'.

Plus I wouldn't want to starve myself of his creative writing.

@mwl reading a bit more from the shell standard I would say \0 is not defined as an escape sequence and must be parsed by the tools:

> The backslash retains its special meaning as an escape character (see Escape Character (Backslash) ) only when followed by one of the characters:
> $ ` " \ <newline>

Ugly, but for example tr does parse `\0`, so this works ;)
busybox $ echo -n "#mwl@ratoperatedvehicle.com#testPW!?" | tr '#' '\0' | base64
