The New Territories in Hong Kong have been home to clans for centuries, long before the British colonised the area. Their families still control parts of the land today, and celebrate their cultural
#heritage and the history of their villages with large gatherings and banquets on selected holidays. Some of the villages are still well maintained and bustling today. This is particularly evident in Yuen Long, a district in the north-western
#Newterritories of
#Hongkong, which is surrounded by mountains. There, the ancestral halls, pagodas, temples, and family residences are well maintained, and some can be explored via heritage trails.
However, as these are not museums and people live there, please make sure you DO NOT obstruct them and DO NOT walk into walled cities or courtyards at random. Many of them are closed to tourists (this is often only indicated in Chinese on some signs), and only some
#monuments can be accessed. To be respectful of the locals, follow the heritage trail paths (see link below) and only enter buildings that are clearly marked as attractions.
One particularly beautiful heritage trail is the Ping Shan Heritage Trail, which leads through a Tang family area. A particular highlight is the Ping Shan Tang Clan Gallery, a museum located on top of a hill.
