I just made myself a Post It holder for my desk and am feeling pretty pleased with myself

(I feel sure I must have stolen this idea from someone at some point... if anyone knows who please let me know so that I can credit them)

Q&A after seminar.

Q: *mentions relevant paper*
A: thanks! I will check it out.
Q: it was published in Nature.
A: well, it might still be true.

It made me laugh anyway.

Writing is thinking.

But also…

Making figures is thinking.

At least it helps me to write by clarifying what we're trying to say and then go back to writing.

#lifeofPI I am going through my first cycle as a PI: does anyone else experience this feeling proud of their supervisee as they started to becoming equal and also feel a bit sad that they are leaving?

Great start to the day. Semantic Scholar alert tells me about an interesting preprint that has cited one of our papers. I click through and find that not only is it an appropriate citation (not always the case), but the authors really understood a deep point in our paper which I wasn’t sure we'd managed to convey.

Remembered a conversation with a long-in-the-tooth academic 10 years ago.

He said “things are bad, so bad. I've never known a situation like this in all my career.” Hilarious really given that, back then, grant success rates were better, we were still in the EU, the madness of world events & COVID was yet to happen.

I suppose with continual decline, it will always feel at (that point in time) like things are the worst its ever been.

I love it when somebody in the lab proves me wrong with experimental data.
