The Strangest Painting Ever

"The Dike," Leon Spilliaert, 1909.

Belgian painter/illustrator/lithographer/graphic artist Spilliaert (1881-1946) was a pioneer of the Symbolist movement in visual arts, which sought to represent absolute truths through imagery. It rose as a reaction to/rebellion against Realism and Naturalism.

Influenced by artists like Edvard Munch and writers like Maurice Maeterlinck and Edgar Allan Poe, he created many arresting images, usually marked by an interesting use of darkness and form, and the bitter and mysterious expressions he puts on his portraits.

In 1909 he was in the of a fascination with seashore images, exploring the juxtaposition of land and sea. Here we have an example of that...the diagonal line draws the eye to the upper left, but there's no sign of any people. Just the shed by the water, and the beacon lights in the far background. Despite a hint of movement in the lines of the ripples on the water, it's a strangely still, quiet image, where the viewer feels almost like an intruder.
