Today marks my 1-year anniversary of getting my name legally changed.
Today marks my 1-year anniversary of getting my name legally changed.
My spouse at the time helped chip in on the expenses and process of having my name legally changed last year. Despite the process on my end being smooth, it's still insane the hoops I had to overcome in this state simply to do so.
Really hoping this passes so it'll be more accessible for my fellow trans michiganders.
Why the hell is updating a legal name so fucking expensive here?
I spent:
18 BRL in printing fees (bc my printer is shit)
174.39 BRL in notary fees
21 BRL for mail delivery of my new birth certificate
Total: 213.39 BRL (not including Uber fares)
Adjusted by federal minimum wages (6/h for Brazil and 7.25/h for America) it would be like 258 USD in the USA.
If we were to use state minimum wages (6.67/h for São Paulo, 15/h for New York, 15.50/h for California) it would be like 480~496 USD.
Thank god there are many programs and initiatives here to provide free name and legal sex change to those who cannot afford to pay out of pocket.
Today is the 7th anniversary of my legal name change. I call it my Bee Day. 🐝
