Alex WildI love how this queen Lasius arizonicus ant is smooth like glass. She’s a social parasite who , after dropping her wings, sneaks into existing ant colonies, kills the resident queen, and takes over.
CarrollWas mich an #Ameisen besonders fasziniert, ist ihr unglaublicher Universalismus; gerade bei der Nahrungssuche. Auf dem ersten Bild ist eine Große Wiesenameise an einem extrafloralen #Nektarium einer (glaube ich) Vogelkirsche zu sehen. Diese Nektarien produzieren gerade beim Austreiben der Blätter viel Nektar um Ameisen anzulocken, welche dann vor Fressfeinden schützen. Wie die Pflanze verhindert, dass die Ameisen, wie die #Lasius im zweiten Bild, #Blattlaus Herden auf ihnen weiden, weiß ich nicht.

For those who know anything about ants, here's a weird one: Lasius xerophilus.
Most Lasius species live in north temperate/boreal forests. This one? Sand dunes in North American deserts. A total oddball, and unexpected, living alongside classic desert species like Pogonomyrmex harvester ants.
