Large fuels that can't be extinguished are often pulled further interior where they won't throw embers over the line when the wind blows on them.

Weather and Fuel Conditions: Weather conditions today will be very similar to what was observed yesterday. Red Flag Warnings are in place for the North Fork Valley. There is no chance for precipitation. Red Flag weather combined with drought conditions and a historically-high burning index (a numerical value used to assess the potential difficulty of containing a wildfire) leads fire managers to anticipate the potential for extreme fire behavior.

Leroux Fire Update

Tuesday, August 5, 2025 10 a.m.
Team Colorado Incident Management Team
Phil Daniels, Incident Commander

Location: 1.5 miles East of Redlands Mesa, Hotchkiss Colorado
Current Size: 179 acres adjusted based on more accurate mapping
Status: Not Contained
Resources: Alpine Hotshots, Flatiron Helitack, Grayback Type 2 hand crew, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) engine, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) engines, two Bulldozers, Excavator/Masticator

Acreage for the Leroux Fire had been estimated by crews on the ground and aerial firefighters until a NIROPS (National Infrared Operations) flight was performed late last night. A correction was made to the fire acreage to reflect this more accurate mapping.

…Today's Activity:

A Type 3 Incident Management Team took command of the fire on Tuesday, August 5 at 6 AM, which means that the incident will have more resources available and more management expertise to fight the fire. Today, firefighters will work around the perimeter focusing on areas where the fire is threatening the line. This begins the tedious process of building containment. Containment doesn't occur when the initial fireline is constructed. It has to be strengthened by the hard work of firefighters who walk the line and extinguish any heat within a defined distance of that line.
