Government accused of 'burying' response to landmark gambling report

A long-awaited response to an inquiry that called for a gambling advertising ban has been tabled on budget day, prompting accusations the government is trying to bury the document.

@jessta
It’s thoroughlly disheartening to see a #Labor #PM mouth off #FossilFuelLobby #TalkingPoints as if he doesn’t have a brain capable of thinking for himself.

AND

If I am wrong, then what is so hard for #AlboPM to explain his position and the critical thinking he applied to arrive there?

IMO

The fact that he hasn’t told Australians what is on his mind is all the answers I need. The #PM is a fool and a traitor to #LaborValues.

The #Greens have my vote from now on.

“We’re seeing this incrementalism in so many parts of how this government is approaching difficult issues and I think the community is sick of it. You can’t always be about compromise.”

Albanese on gambling: ‘You’ve got to treat people like adults’

The prime minister wants Australians to know that his is a government ready to take action on the harms of gambling addiction – but good reform takes time and a total ban isn’t the solution. “It’s terrible if people get addicted to gambling,” Anthony Albanese tells The Saturday Paper. “The solutions aren’t always just to ban things. So it’s about just getting it right, and I think we’ve got it right.”

The Saturday Paper

"A full ban, according to the AGRC’s report which has not been released, would decrease yearly public spending on gambling by $109.5m – or 1.4%."

So, Labor is saying that reducing gambling revenue by 1.4% is too large a burden on the industry. Such brave, human-centred public policy.

Labor’s plan to restrict gambling ads set to reduce wagering by just 0.8%, government analysis shows

Report by the prime minister’s office says a total ban would have a ‘higher net benefit’ but would hit sporting codes very hard

The Guardian

"All the evidence from public health experts like Prof Samantha Thomas at Deakin University, to the government’s own regulator, the ACMA, shows that partial bans do not work."

We cannot celebrate tinkering when it comes to gambling reform. Labor’s response falls tragically short

What the Albanese government is proposing is not evidence-based, and it will not reverse the normalisation of gambling among young people

The Guardian

"The reality is that Albanese does not want to upset the profitable nexus between sport, gambling and television. He has been convinced that without gambling revenue, television would not survive, and without television licensing deals sporting codes would not be able to support children’s football.

"It’s a sorry world if an under-7s side is dependent on gambling addicts for its existence. Somehow, this is the world in which Albanese lives. It’s very unlikely this is true, but it sounds convincing in the box at State of Origin. If it were true, of course, the government could always step in and fund children’s sport. That would require strength and decisiveness and several other attributes that on this issue elude Albanese."

Albanese’s gamble

This is how Anthony Albanese works: he takes too long to make a decision and when he finally does the decision he makes is too weak. He is like an orange tree fruiting in summer, small and pale and sparsely set. Politically, this is a terrible characteristic. He weathers all the opprobrium of indecision and then, in eventually acting, reminds everyone of his inadequacy. Speed is not traded for thoughtfulness or thoughtfulness traded for urgency. He is simply slow and wrong. He is at once late, indecisive and insubstantial.

The Saturday Paper

'If there's too much regulation, people will just move to unlicensed offshore betting'.

The gambling industry's response to Albanese's timid reform proposal is the classic drug dealer's defence and shows just how morally bankrupt they are.

So the poor gambling companies will only be able to run ads once EVERY 20 MINUTES in prime time.

How can they possibly survive?
