Labor Day ...

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

All of us should care about workers’ rights. When people have bad working conditions and no voice on the job, it’s bad for them and for all of us. #LaborDay2021

For generations, organized labor and working individuals have built our communities while paving the way for a 40-hour work week, better working conditions, benefits, and a minimum wage.

On this day, we celebrate their achievements and grit, especially throughout this pandemic. Thank you for all of your hard work. Today and every day, honor the contributions of union members and labor and the improvements fought for by organized labor that have benefitted all workers.

Although the battle over these issues would seem to have been won long ago, we are still fighting today for fair wages for workers and for their rights to organize.

If you’re working today, thank you. If you’re off, enjoy your day. Be extra kind to any workers you encounter. Wishing everyone a happy & safe Labor Day. 🇺🇸
