That red dot next to Moon tonight is Mars. For continental USA observers Moon will occult (cover up) Mars later tonight. Hey North American observers, FYI the very bright object to Moon’s lower right tonight is Venus. The dimmer object between Venus and Moon is Saturn. Your homework is to watch Moon’s position change relative to Venus and Saturn over the next few nights. #LCTTA #NakedEyeAstronomy

“Supermoon” is still mostly nonsense, but tonight’s blue Moon is the real deal as defined by the original meaning of the term, not the more recently adopted definition. All full Moons are worthy of your gaze every 29.53 days. #ITeachAstronomy #LCTTA #BlueMoon

Be careful what you read or hear. Eclipses are NOT rare. They occur with breathtaking regularity. Your ability to witness one is a different issue. There is NOTHING about a solar eclipse that makes gazing sunward with unprotected eyes more dangerous (shame on school admins for not understanding this). Every kid should see this in spite of admin prohibitions. Finally, “solar eclipses” are really solar occultations and Earth is the eclipsed body. #LCTTA #SolarEclipse #Astronomy
