Blair Witch meets 5 Freunde à la Lovecraft … oder so ähnlich. In „The Cull“ geht es um Jugendliche, die ein wenig Abenteuer suchen und stattdessen die Hölle entdecken. Oder so ähnlich. Genaugenommen haben die fünf jungen Menschen ganz verschiedene Ziele, als sie mitten in der Nacht aufbrechen, ihre Elternhäuser hinter sich lassen und sich ins Dunkel hinauswagen. Vier von ihnen suchen die optimalen Lichtbedingungen, um die Felsformationen am Black Water Beach bei Sonnenaufgang zu filmen. Cleo aber sucht ihren vermissten Bruder. Als sie in einem der Felsen den Zugang zu einer fremden Welt mit rosa Himmel und seltsamen Lebensformen entdecken, haben sie alle nasse Hosenbeine, aber keine kalten Füße. Ihr Mut wird sogar belohnt, als ein magischer Formwandelpanda (ja, genau) ihnen übermenschliche Kräfte verleiht. Nur Cleo erweckt sein Misstrauen, denn er erkennt, dass sie andere Ziele verfolgt als ihre Freunde. Es kommt zu einem kurzen Kampf, und die Teenager flüchten zurück zu dem Felsportal, um in ihre Welt zurück zu gelangen. Okay, so I finally got around to reading #AbsoluteWonderWoman by #KellyThompson, #HaydenSherman, & #JordieBellaire. Freaking AMAZING! My favorite comic of the new year. Next up #AbsoluteSuperman Can it be that the Absolute line will be 3 for 3. #AbsoluteBatman is amazing too.

On Free Comic Book Day I picked up the first issue of Black Cloak, having noticed it was written by Kelly Thompson. I’ve enjoyed her other comics, so decided to give this one a shot.

It’s a fun noir and urban fantasy, and this oversized first issue packs in some world building that won me over. I was very distracted by the inking of the art by Meredith McClaren, and the very thick lines really took me out of things. I might return to read the rest of the first collected volume to see if I can get back into the story, but I was left underwhelmed when I was hoping for an ongoing series I could commit to.
