Sphinx – The Hunting of the Snark

Left side: Two details from the illustration by #HenryHoliday to the chapter "The Hunting" in #LewisCarroll’s "#TheHuntingOfTheSnark" (woodcut by #JosephSwain)

Right side: The 1674 print at #Rijksmuseum depicting William III (#WilliamOfOrange) and the allegorical figures for “religion” and “liberty”, a “#LiberumBelgium” motive.

Holiday integrated three elements from that 1674 print into his illustration (1876). "Liberty" became "Hope" and "Religion" became "Care" (https://snrk.de/page_eagle-and-star/).

Religion and Liberty Care and Hope – The Hunting of the Snark

The HMS Beagle laid ashore at Tierra del Fuego, Santa Cruz river, 50.1125°S and 68.3917°W, 1834-04-16. In 1838, #ConradMartens’ drawing has been engraved by #ThomasLandseer and published by #HenryColburn in "The Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle".

This image is an assemblage: I added two persons (drawn by #HenryHoliday and cut by #JosephSwain for #LewisCarroll’s "#TheHuntingOfTheSnark") to the image.
