Agreed. Good news.
And, given that last time I looked up to 40% of the Australian workforce holds a degree, that first degree ought to be free — delivered as a social service to the workforce (to keep up with recruitment requirements) to the benefit of productivity and the economy.

Why can’t we all see the truth of this #JasonClareMP ?

Here is a headline (a report title to be precise) which would cause no surprise in the private sector. This sort of thing goes on all the times in our capitalist markets. But to have it label a report on the financial books of a not-for-profit PUBLIC institution is the epitome of #Corruption #Ineptitude #Mismanagement and #Buffoonery

Is there anything else required to convince everyone that the issue and the problems with ANU’s alleged financial troubles is anything but financial trouble?

Squarely, this misapprehension is a direct result of #Mismanagement and #AccrualAccounting neither of which ought to be experienced by an education institution.

Time for the #Education #Minister Jason Clare to dismiss the council outright and implement the recommended fixes that were commended to him Including scrapping the #JobReadyGraduate #Morrison crap!

“If we believe the auditor, there is no crisis at the ANU. To be clear, as a government owned, not-for-profit entity, the ANU is under no pressure to maximise its profits so that it can maximise dividends paid to shareholders. On the contrary, when the ANU made a surplus of $89.9 million in 2024 it did so by spending less money on its students, staff and community than it received.” (Source: The Australian Institute)

The ANU’s hidden $90m budget surplus

New analysis by The Australia Institute reveals there is no financial crisis at the Australian National University.

AND, while on the subject of education institutions — were we not? Have a read of Jane Caro here reminding us that our society is not egalitarian at all and has a full on class warfare problem in education in our hands.

“The inequity is more profound than simply money. The “level playing field” quoted above is about much more than dollars and cents. What Australia has done over the past quarter century is create two parallel, publicly funded education systems: one with all the rights and one with all the responsibilities. Private schools can be public when it comes to the handing out of public money but private when it comes to everything else. They can charge any fees they choose. They can open schools wherever they like and refuse to open, or choose to close them, whenever they like. They can hire and fire whomever they like, because they have a statutory exemption to the Anti-Discrimination Act, and fight hard not only to hang on to it but to extend it via religious freedom bills. They can refuse to enrol and choose to expel whomever they like – or more pertinently, don’t like. They can also, if they want to, teach creationism and actively discourage girls from going to university – with the help of taxpayers.”

I urge you to read the article. And then get loud on social media because the whole thing sucks…

The segregation crisis in schools funding

In the Albanese government’s first term, Education Minister Jason Clare observed that Australia has one of the most segregated education systems in the OECD. What is deeply shocking – though not surprising to anyone who has been following this issue for as long as I have – is that our children are mostly segregated according to social class. No schooling system anywhere in the world is completely equal, but Australia is alone in using education funding to turbocharge the divide between rich and poor.

Student bodies should be up in arms about this. Boycotting campuses, mounting protests and getting media involved much more, etc… Campuses in the late 60s and early 70s were much more militant and moved reforms as a result… Not harking to the past, but while I hear students and staff complaining, it’s all in private conversations and not ‘out there’ where it matters. Student unionism is also weaker (membership, not in courage) than it was previously. I don’t think we should sit back and rely on ‘officials’ to do the right thing here. That would be very foolish and stupid. But what else to do, you and I?

The Morrison govt’s JRG initiative was a near fatal blow to what are supposed to be preeminent research and education institutions in our education system(s). Yet the current Labor govt sees fit not to kill it. One begins to wonder why not? What is being defended here? A little more transparency from #JasonClareMP might go a long way to resolve the problems currently experienced in our tertiary institutions.

Again, as is amply demonstrated in the US, we are seeing typical bully behaviour from the Chancelor. Let’s be clear, nothing #Bishop has said so far (and available to me) leads me to doubt Dr Allen’s allegations. Unfortunately, in such cases, the alleged bully is unlikely to recant and will use all available means to tar opposing parties in a fierce battle for ‘perceived’ damages to ‘reputation’.

There’s been a few litigations battles doing the rounds of late. It’s going to get very long, nasty and very expensive for Dr Allen. I fear she isn’t going to come through it all without a lot of help and support. Standing up to a bully with means is not a battle to wage without steadfast backing and support. But where’s the support going to come from?

“Australian musicians are among the team putting pressure on ANU Chancellor Julie Bishop and the ANU Council to abandon their plans to dismantle the School of Music. The team have called on Bishop to halt job cuts, continue its performance and composition majors, and maintain one-on-one music tuition in an open letter.

The open letter was written by the newly formed School of Music Advocacy Roundtable and signed by over 40 high-profile supporters.”

This is a bit of ‘Johnny-come-lately’, esp after the CSO had already made its position very clear on any thought of closing the #ANU #SchoolOfMusic by #JulieBishop ‘s Council Fiefdom. But any additional pressure is most welcomed. Keep it up guys, let’s pile it on.
