Una motovedetta della Guardia Costiera l’altra notte ha soccorso dei naufraghi a una quarantina di miglia da Lampedusa. In zona Sar Libica. Ma il soccorso è arrivato troppo tardi. Nel gommone c’erano 26 persone, di queste 19 erano già morte e cinque erano in condizioni cliniche molto serie. Anche un bambino. Sono state portate di corsa al molo di Lampedusa, speriamo si salveranno.
Nei giorni scorsi c’erano stati altri naufragi nel Mediterraneo. Con decine e decine di vittime. I giornali ne parlano poco, considerano la strage di profughi un fatto ordinario, di scarso interesse. Il ministro Piantedosi talvolta addirittura si autoloda perché dice che è riuscito a ridurre gli sbarchi. E invece è del tutto evidente che la strage nel Mediterraneo è una emergenza. Come quando arriva un’alluvione o un terremoto. È la principale emergenza civile che c’è oggi in Italia, anche se le vittime non sono italiane. Una delle ragioni di questa ecatombe sta nella debolezza della rete dei soccorsi. Le motovedette della Guardia Costiera italiana riescono a intervenire solo poche volte. La flotta delle Ong che svolgono l’attività di soccorso è stata clamorosamente indebolita dalle leggi in parte varate dal governo Meloni, in parte dal governo Gentiloni. Leggi che impongono il sequestro delle navi di soccorso e l’ordine di attracco a migliaia di chilometri da dove il soccorso è avvenuto. Queste leggi stanno producendo moltissimi morti. Per affrontare l’emergenza c’è un solo modo: abrogare queste leggi e dare mano libera alle Ong. È un provvedimento che non costa nulla. Solo la rinuncia al cinismo. Giorgia Meloni vorrà prenderlo in considerazione?
Appeal to Meloni: Suspend the anti-shipwreck laws

One of the reasons for this holocaust is the weakness of the rescue network. Italian Coast Guard patrol boats can only intervene a few times. The fleet of NGOs that carry out the rescue activity has been disastrously weakened by laws partly enacted by the Meloni government and partly by the Gentiloni government. Laws that impose the seizure of rescue ships and the order to dock thousands of kilometers from where the rescue took place. These laws are producing many deaths. To deal with the emergency there is only one way: to repeal these laws and give free rein to the NGOs. It is a measure that costs nothing. Only the renunciation of cynicism. Will Giorgia Meloni consider it?
