Thinking about climbing Island Peak? It is one of the best ways to try real mountaineering in Nepal without going full Everest. The climb is definitely challenging-you’ll be walking on glaciers, using crampons and ropes, and tackling some pretty steep ice slopes. Okay, Island Peak, is that correct? Imagine being able to climb a real mountain after walking through the Everest region, which is already fairly amazing. Although it isn't Everest, it is a natural peak with the unique pyramidal shape. You'll need crampons, ropes, and everything else, but trekkers with a little patience can manage it. The scenery? It's like you're in the middle of a Himalayan dream from the top, with giants all around you.

Island Peak summit! This is looking SW towards AMA Dablam (peak in the centre). Another climber is about to reach the top of the ridge.

I shot this with a fisheye for that ‘top of the world’ look and straightened it in post, because it just looked better.

Island peak base camp. Island peak (Imja Tse) itself is out of frame to the left. The two visible summits are ‘Num Ri’ (left) and a subsidiary peak of Baruntse (right).

It was… well let’s just say it was cold work crouching in the rocks trying to get the exposure right 😅. The guy walking through camp with a headtorch was just luck.
