Well. Weeks/months after the total shutdown of #pocket, and migrating to other services, I notice that I don't consume my reading list anymore.

I've switched to #raindrop but it's not a read later tool. #instapaper could be, but apart from Kobo integration, it's not super usable tbh.

Part of this is me missing my own #inmypocket addon, but also imperfect alternatives. Not sure what I'll do next. Reboot the addon? Start yet another service? Contribute to open-source and self-host? 🤷‍♂️

@pabuisson
I ended up going with linkwarden. Self-hosted (which I have no issue with). I also "vibe coded" a firefox extension to mimic #InMyPocket but its nowhere as polished. But it was very easy to do.
I also use inoreader which I tied into linkwarden so when I save links from certain apps it will transfer them over automatically.
There is a linkwarden ios in the works which should give us native share sheet integration.
For now this works for me.

#linkding is another #opensource option, which seems the best fit for me: simple yet nice UI, it does what I need and even a bit more.

I'd need to self-host, why not, I'm not against it.

The browser addon has a feature I always wanted for #InMyPocket: search the items from the address bar. It can't list all your items though 😅 but again, I could adapt #InMyPocket to support this project.

It seems like a good option for me, but I'd also need to build something to sync to my #ereader.

@wallabag is #opensource, founded and built by a French dev 💪 and has been around for a very long time.

Open-source means many clients and integrations... of varying quality.

I could adapt #InMyPocket to support it or contribute to the existing projects.

Not sure about the state of mobile clients. There are ways to sync with e-readers but again, unsure how easy/practical they are.

I feel everything I need (and more) would be possible but I'm worried about the UX of everything too 😅

4/? ⬇️

@instapaper now has an official #kobo integration, which is a big plus: no need for workarounds, it's built-in, it works fine.

It's been around forever.

But I find it lacking, UX is often surprising, imports too, and plenty of little things annoy me even without even using it on a daily basis. No basic search is just a no-go.

I *could* adapt #InMyPocket to work around this search thing. Not sure if it'd be OK, but only the plain-text search is part of the premium so maybe.

3/? ⬇️

Let's start with #raindrop!

It is where most of my #InMyPocket users migrated to.

It's nice, has a large ecosystem and the apps and addons all look and work great, *BUT* it is a bookmark management tool. Not the best XP for read later but still a solid pick that I'm using at the moment. No built-in option to sync with e-readers though.

In case you're interested in the future of my #InMyPocket browser addon following #pocket shut down announcement, I've regrouped discussions on the project repository, in this issue: https://github.com/pabuisson/in-my-pocket/issues/4 💬

Feel free to contribute to the discussion on github or ping me here on mastodon if you feel like it 😉

And a new #inmypocket 0.12.20 version is out 🙌 It mostly is about fixing sync problems that currently affect some users (initial sync or any subsequent "refresh items list" sync).

Trying to improve my error reporting around those + relaxing some strict conditions + asking smaller chunks from Pocket API. Let's see how this goes! 🚀

It also includes a performance update that should make the popup rendering faster for long lists of items ⏱️

In my Pocket firefox addon - Changelog

List of the changes brought to each version of the In My Pocket browser addon for Firefox. New features, updates, fixes, design upgrades... all listed here!

Spent some time to improve HTTP timeout management on my #inmypocket addon, improve some onboarding screens (while waiting for the 1st sync to complete) and at the same time added a light/dark theme on the addon site, because it was really hurting my eyes 🙈 https://inmypocketaddon.com/

(not live yet, I'll update the addon tomorrow and the website at the same time 😉)

And I have to say #indiehacking always feels right 😊
