Biwa-chan wandering around the living room. We have to leave for a while this evening so she's been let in to bed down earlier than usual. Once it gets dark enough she doesn't try to wander around as much.

Biwa-chan jumped down off her roosting blanket to join in with the sparrows feeding in the video...

Good night birdies! This is little Blanca's first night up on the roosting bar. Usually, after her mother Shiro jumps up onto the bar, Blanca runs around chirping in desperation until a human keeps her warm on their body or in a heated box. I should check later to make sure she doesn't fall down later when it's to dark for her to get back up. It's still cold at night, and the high-pitched chirping might keep the neighbors awake, or attract predators? or just be unhealthy for a little bird. It was kind of fun goofing off with Blanca as a accessory for the wrist, crotch, and head but three birds in the living room is enough. Two of them can't walk or get up on the roosting bar, or discourage and avoid insistent roosters so they will probably be indoor birds most nights for the rest of their lives. The third bird just walks herself into the house no her own. She's getting better about us holding her in the entrance GenKan to wipe her feet down. It will be good to have a bird that is used to being held and inside when we want to share the Silky experience with a class or some other Animal Therapy sort of event.. The former boss rooster tries get settled for the night early but takes center stage. The old boss is driven out by the new boss and has to be the last one up. At least they are all sleeping in the same night cage though. It's easy to forget a spot when you have to close up four of five places so they aren't eaten by weasels, or martens, or raccoon dogs or something at night.

The crotch: It's not just for zippers any more.

The wrist: It's not just for bracelets any more.

The Kitchen: It's not just for humans anymore.
BiwaChan was left down on the ground at night. She couldn't follow her mother up onto the roosting bar. We had two others that we had sleep indoors with the heater in the hatchling box until they were big enough to get up on to the roosting bar. The other two made the transition. We put BiwaChan in with the others a few times, but she keeps showing up at the door. In the cold (no mosquitos or flies!) we sometimes leave the door open while we get the two unabel-to-walk mangle-footed birds (Mango and AkebiChan). BiwaChan is good about seizing the open-door opportunity and just stroll right up into the house, down the hallway and around to the bird-corner of the living room. That will be another post: The Living Room, It's not just for humans anymore. Sure people with dogs and cats can say the same thing, but it's more suprising with chickens. As long as you can keep the over some old cloth or a newspaper the poop isn't a problem. It might be after it gets hot and humid. But the birds are good about snatching up any bugs... We'll see, always learning something.

This is Biwa-chan. She was abandoned early by her mother Plum. So Biwa-chan ended up sleeping in-doors since she didn't have a place among the other birds at night. She gets along with the other birds just fine during the day. But she ends up on her own at night. Recently she just has started to just wait by the front door and walks herself in at night. She is used to the routine now. We have to keep an old t-shirt or some other recycled cloth by the door to wipe her feet before she gets up on the flooring and walks over to her box on the newspaper-covered part of the little tatami room.

We're not sure how long this one (BiwaChan) will avoid sleeping with the other birds and insist on making herself at home on the couch at night. I forget to put her out to eat with the other if she doesn't get up, make her way out from under the covers and start chirping away in the morning. She's still too small and cute to refuse...
