Time to revise my #DataQuality in the wild hashtag from the “other place” for this doozy..

#IQTrainwreck

Frank Sonderborg (@[email protected])

Spain’s new S-80 submarine was approximately 70 to 100 tons heavier than intended due to a decimal point error made during the design phase. Someone placed a decimal point in the wrong place while calculating the weight, which led to significant issues with buoyancy and surfacing ability—meaning the submarine could potentially go down but not reliably resurface. No one expects the Spanish addition;-)

A brilliant piece of research by #TheGuardian linking simple #DataQuality issues to the unmitigated shit show of US #Tariffs. Errors in bills of lading and shipping data might be one of the root causes of the stupidity. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/apr/04/revealed-how-trump-tariffs-slugged-norfolk-island-and-uninhabited-heard-and-mcdonald-islands

#IQTrainwreck

Not that Norfolk! Mislabelled shipments led to Trump tariffs on uninhabited islands and remote outposts with no US trade

Exclusive: Aquarium systems, Timberland boots and recycling plant parts were mislabelled as coming from remote Norfolk Island or Heard and McDonald islands

A great example of an #IQTrainwreck spotted in the wild by @privacat An overflow error in PhP reformats a commonly used fake phone number format to being an actual real phone number.
Worth remembering that "phone numbers" are just label identifiers for a circuit path end node in a network and perhaps shouldn't be handled as integers in your data model https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/dallas-family-thrift-center-daily-wtf-poor-data-carey-lening-cdpp-bmy6e/

"All medical #diagnosticians work by identifying significant #deviations from good health; a sexy way to do this with an Excel-based process would be to #train an #AI with historical data and ask it to alert on deviation."

Hi,

I spotted this article on The Journal:

UK air traffic services says fault was caused by flight data it received

https://jrnl.ie/6154515

It is another example of an #IQTrainWreck (based on what’s reported).

Raises questions about:

1) #DataQuality controls at input
2) #DataQuality controls on import/ingestion
3)Exception handling processes.
4)Recovery processes

However, in a high risk environment doing a “stop everything” action when unexpected happens is disruptive but necessary.

UK air traffic services says fault was caused by flight data it received

There are no indications that the failure was caused by a cyber-attack, according to the UK’s National Air Traffic Services (Nats).

#DataQuality issues impact on people. This is another #IQTrainwreck from Ulster Bank but highlights how small data quality issues can have significant impacts on people.
‘I can’t afford this and I won’t stand for it’ – new bank blunder will cost homeowners up to €600 more a mont

A banking blunder has led to mortgage customers being under-charged for years, leaving them to face huge increases in their monthly costs.

*#IQTrainWreck is a #DataQuality or #InformationQuality problem that causes an embarrassing but avoidable headline or results in significant impacts on people or organisations. I coined the term back in 2005. See http://iqtrainwrecks.info for some classic examples or check the hashtag over on the bird site as well.

Up to 35,000 Bank of Ireland customers impacted by error on KBC mortgage transfers

The bank sent a letter to the customers, who had transferred mortgages from KBC, admitting it had yet to provide important information to the Central Credit Register (CCR) on their mortgages due to a data entry error by the bank
