I have a few "canary" devices that I upgraded to iPadOS 26 pretty early, and it was bad. Very bad. Not just Liquid Glass, but these older, slower devices got even more so.

The three in question are an iPad 8th gen, iPad Air 3, and iPad Pro 2018. All still supported and working OK with iOS previously.

Over time as I upgraded them I felt them get even slower and less usable. Oh well, I thought, these are all older devices nearly at the end of their support window.

However, after upgrading to iPadOS 26.2 I seem to have noticed all three being snappier. The responsiveness and usability are back to iOS 18 levels in all three cases. It's taken them months to figure this out, but now it may just be a factor of dealing with UX wonk and not serious performance degradation.

I’m sure I can’t be the only person who’s reevaluating their relationship with Apple in light of their failure to release iOS 18.7.3 for newer iPhones.
My friends report all kinds of issues with iOS 26.2 which I have no intention of subjecting myself to.
As yet I’ve not made any firm decisions but it’s looking likely that as my devices progressively become obsolete they’ll be replaced by other brands so I’ll be trying to ask pertinent questions ;)
