#ICAME47 is officially over! A huge thank you to Andreas and his colleagues for the fab organisation! The next ICAME will be 18-22 May 2027 inโ€ฆ ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅ Helsinki!
Apart from my annoying questions in some of the Q&As, I believe that Natalia Levshina is the first to at least mention the environmental impact of LLMs at the #ICAME47. Thank you! ๐Ÿ™

The final plenary speaker #ICAME47 is Natalia Levshina! She begins her talk on the responsible use of AI for corpus annotation by reminding us that weโ€™ve been using โ€žAIโ€œ long before the current hype but that the definition of the term is really a moving target!

The theme of the #ICAME47 conference is โ€œA Confluence of Corpus Research in the Age of AIโ€ so there are lots of studies using LLMs, but also plenty of mentions of good-old BERT models (which are arguably often better at the kinds of classifying tasks that are needed for corpus annotation). BERT was particularly well represented in @coopersensei.bsky.social's slides!

I submitted a poster abstract to the #ICAME47 because I thought this would be the most low-key format to present work-in-progress, but then there were only four posters and we each got a four minutes after todayโ€˜s plenary in the large auditorium ๐Ÿ˜ฑDefinitely more attention than I had envisaged, but I think it went well. I was done at 3โ€˜59! โฑ๏ธ Lots of encouraging feedback and interesting follow-up ideas! โ˜บ๏ธ

Day 3 of the #ICAME47 conference started with a beautiful ride across the Mosel river, an entertaining plenary by Jonathan Culpeper on examining Shakespeare's works with corpus linguistics methods, and four lightning poster talks. Looking forward to the rest! โ˜€๏ธ

Laurence Anthony is always a great choice for a plenary speaker! Opening the #ICAME47, Laurence presented some of the exciting new features he's recently developed for AntConc and his vision for the confluence of #GenAI and corpus #linguistics. I don't agree with everything, but I really appreciate the focus on local LLMs, his highly impressive, continuous development of free educational software, and his generally positive outlook on the future of corpus linguistics! A brilliant start to the #ICAME47!

@corpuslinguistics

The ICAME is an international conference about English corpus linguistics. Today is the pre-conference workshop day and I'm hopping between the difference workshops as I am not working on any of these topics at the moment, but I am interested in everything and looking forward to getting some methodological inspiration for my own research!

I made it to the #ICAME47 conference in Koblenz and it's fair to say that Iโ€™ve had less pleasant conference travel! ๐Ÿš‰ ๐Ÿšฒ
