A 1990 letter from Houston poet Sarah Cortez to Susan Klimczak sits in the Texas Digital Library โ€” a small artifact connecting Houston's Mexican American literary community, law enforcement (Cortez was a cop), and lesbian community organizing. One document, multiple worlds overlapping. Houston's creative underground left paper trails. #HoustonHistory #TexasLiterature #ChicanaAuthors #TexasArchives
A 1992 letter from Hispanic American author Sarah Cortez to Susan Klimczak sits in Houston Public Library's archive โ€” two installments written just two days apart, June 6 and 8. It connects Houston's Mexican American literary community to broader questions of identity, policing, and lesbian community in early '90s Texas. Personal correspondence like this is often how literary history actually gets made. #TexasHistory #HoustonHistory #MexicanAmerican #TexasLiterature

This community was built on top of Schrimpf Alley or "El Barrio del Alacran," a racially-integrated slum that lacked paved roads and plumbing.

Schrimpf Alley was razed in preparation for Clayton Homes in 1951.
