At the time this photo was taken, Clayton Homes was a brand new townhome community for Mexican families.

This community was built on top of Schrimpf Alley or "El Barrio del Alacran," a racially-integrated slum that lacked paved roads and plumbing.

Schrimpf Alley was razed in preparation for Clayton Homes in 1951.
