City of Houston and Harris County at odds over funding to combat homelessness

After Harris County Commissioners Court approved $8 million for homelessness services, the City of Houston’s housing department claimed the money would “go directly towards the Mayor’s Homelessness Action Plan.” The county’s housing director said, “We wouldn't call it the mayor's program.”

Houston City Council considers extending ban on sitting, lying down on sidewalks to Magnolia Park

The city’s civility ordinance prohibits sitting or lying down on sidewalks during the day. It’s already in place in multiple neighborhoods, including Midtown and Museum Park.

‘The homeless in public space is just not gonna be acceptable’: Whitmire promises city encampment

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the city will roll out a city-sponsored encampment for unhoused people. The initiative will be led by his Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security and the city’s Housing and Community Development Department.
