Fun history lesson!
In June 1846, 33 US immigrants in Alta California who had entered without official permission rebelled against the Mexican government. Among their grievances were that they had not been allowed to buy or rent land and had been threatened with expulsion.
They declared independence and formed the "Republic of California," and adopted the Bear Flag.
In other words, a group of white "illegal aliens" from the U.S. revolted against Mexico and started a new country. And that is the origin story of California. What an irony.

A law passed in 1539 made it a capital offence for a priest to marry a woman. (Strangely, keeping a woman as a concubine resulted only in confiscation of property.) A late amendment allowed married priests three weeks to "put away" their wives without penalty. Archbishop Cranmer sent his wife and children to Germany.
