Raised crossings on the new designs for McGrath Boulevard! So many good things in these plans, it'll be a huge improvement and can't come soon enough.

@resilienceSci 🙏for helpful link. I'm still none the wiser on broader traffic flow, but found this very positive assessment from a foreign resident's perspective, 20 years on:

Cheonggyecheon: Rip It Up and Start Again - The Bentway

After a massive public-works project in the 2000s, a stream once again flows through Seoul. In this personal essay, Andrew Russeth admires Cheonggyecheon, a 10.9km long stream and modern public recreation space in downtown Seoul, South Korea.

[When] “road capacity increases by 1 percent, the number of cars on the road after a few years also increases by 1 percent.”

The Katy Freeway in #Houston is “one of the widest highways in the world with 26 lanes.” Within five years of its expansion, “peak hour travel times on the freeway were longer than before the expansion.”

Widening Highways Doesn’t Fix Traffic. So Why Do We Keep Doing It?

With billions of dollars available to improve transportation infrastructure, states have a chance to try new strategies for addressing congestion. But some habits are hard to break.

The New York Times

The most pleasant and walkable #cities in the United States do not have limited access highways in their downtowns.

Although it may not be apparent to a driver, few businesses or human activities can succeed in areas close to the noise, traffic, and pollution of large highways. Planners should be working on urban #highwayremoval, not expansions.

By Eric Brelsford and Alan McConchie It’s hard to believe that it was only one a month ago when the Ever Given container ship got stuck in the Suez Canal. As cartographers, one of our favorite memes from the Ever Given era was the Ever Given Ever Ywhere tool built by Garrett Dash Nelson, that...

It’s incredible how much we’ve given up in the United States all so we can travel slightly faster by car. The above graphic, revived by Lloyd Alter at Network blog Treehugger this week …
