1000 Day Album Challenge (#12) Ann Peebles: I Can’t Stand the Rain (1974) [12.01.24]
I can't stand the rain against my window bringing back sweet memories…
in a way I was a fan of Ann Peebles before I even knew who she was. in high school I became a big fan of Graham Parker (& The Rumour). Squeezing Out Sparks (1979) was my fave and the album I knew best, but I knew his earlier music too. some album(s) I owned and some were owned by friends. I don’t think I owned Stick to Me (1977). still I fell in love with his version of Ann Peebles’ I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down which is featured on that album. since Ann Peebles didn’t write the song I might not have learned that she had done the original version until I bought I Can’t Stand the Rain years later.
it would be easy to here I Can’t Stand the Rain and think “this sounds like a female version of Al Green.” this was her first album for Hi Records, which also recorded Al Green. she is produced by Al’s producer, Willie Mitchell, and backed by the same house band.
even without ever having heard it, I imagine quite a few people would recognize I Can’t Stand the Rain because Missy Elliott sampled it and based her song The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly) on it. she has created another great song out of the original, but I will take Ann Peebles’ original every time. her vocals are the hook that makes Supa Dupa Fly work so well.
I love this album as well as several others by Ann Peebles. it’s a great listen. I would say the last tune, One Way Street, is the only dud in the bunch.
