Man, another random memory (so weird!!),
In the summer of 1993, I was taking an Algebra (no, probably Calculus) class at a community college a few miles east of here, and I had a little battery-powered pencil sharpener. It was pretty cool -- an electrical pencil sharpener, in my backpack! Now that I think of it, I used to think the mains-connected pencil sharpeners that my dad had were super cool. Still do. I remember when I got to play with a HeNe laser after I finished the 12th grade, it reminded me a lot of one of those pencil sharpeners -- a large rectangular box with a single pencil-sized hole in the front. ;)
#HeNe lasers were legit. A lot brighter than laser diodes for the same wattage.
Oh, finishing my memory from 1993, we were taking a big test in that Calculus class, and I sharpened my pencil right as we were starting. One of the students laughed and said, "I guess that's our equivalent of, 'Gentlemen, start your engines!'" ;)
