Recent and projected changes in the Antarctic cryosphere increasingly mirror those previously observed in Greenland. However, the length of observational records from Antarctica makes it difficult to determine how much of this change reflects internal variability or climate change forcing. The term "Greenlandification" of Antarctica describes these observed ice dynamic changes. It indicates that lessons from the Arctic are a useful proxy for understanding the present-day evolution of Antarctica. Notably, we show that ocean and atmosphere-driven processes over both ice sheets follow similar trajectories, observable already especially in the coastal zone of Antarctica. We identify earth observation (EO) data that allows monitoring of both ice sheets in near real-time, as a potential gamechanger helping to identify important ice, ocean and atmosphere processes driving the Greenlandification of Antarctica.

TIL #Greenlandification originally referred to #culture #society + #language evolution.
Only after Robin Bell's paper in 2018 did it start to be used refer to #ClimateChange in #antarctica.
(I may have been one of the earliest to use it in print in 2021 - but after my then office mate Christian Rodehacke wrote it in a paper in 2020, the earliest mention on the birdsite is *cough* a tweet from me in 2018.. 😳 )
