Our favourite castle in Herefordshire, Goodrich. Goodrich Castle, located near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire, is one of the finest and best-preserved examples of a medieval castle in England. Its origins date back to the 11th century, but it was significantly expanded during the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle occupies a strategic position overlooking the River Wye, which allowed it to control access to the river and surrounding lands. A wonderfully quiet and peaceful view from the battlements over the river Wye.

It was initially built as a wooden fortification shortly after the Norman Conquest but was transformed into a stone castle in the late 12th century by William Fitz Baderon, a nobleman in the service of King Henry II.

Beautiful and very peaceful, worthy indeed of a Silent Sunday post :)

Goodrich Castle reached its zenith in the 13th century under the de Clare family, who further strengthened its defenses and constructed a more sophisticated inner bailey. The square Norman keep and surrounding curtain wall were enhanced, making the castle a formidable stronghold.
Goodrich has suffered relatively little during its history and therefore stands as an example of a castle where most of the original structure survives. It is completely incredible to visit and a must-see for all fans of castle architecture.

Goodrich castle's strategic location made it important for controlling the Welsh Marches, a borderland between England and Wales.
During the 12th century, Goodrich was significantly expanded, particularly under William Marshal, the powerful Earl of Pembroke, and his descendants. Marshal is often credited with fortifying the castle and giving it much of the form seen today.
