Musical Interlude: OK, I'm not a huge fan of this artist, but I heard this while getting dressed this morning and it struck me still. It's wonderful that protest songs are re-emerging, but sickening to know they're necessary. Still, I blinked back some tears listening to this. Stand firm.

Courage in the face of oppression is vital..

I grew up in Norman OK, home to the U of Oklahoma, and a "sundown" town where Black people were only allowed in town during the day.

This didn't formally end until 1967, when Dr. George Henderson became the first Black OU professor, the first Black homeowner in Norman. His son, George Jr. was in my class in high school. . He and sister Michelle, 1 year younger, were the first Black people I ever knew.

These times are hard. But we've been through hard times before, and it's encouraging to remember that, ultimately, people of courage and goodwill always triumph.

To that end, I'm starting a hashtag to share true stories that inspire real hope: #GoodWillWin, which is a riff on a saying of my father's: "In the end good will out, and evil will get its due."

First installment: please find and watch the great and truthful film "Good Night, and Good Luck," in which actor David Strathairn brilliantly portrays the courageous journalist Edward R. Murrow, who succeeded in destroying the fascist U.S. politician Joe McCarthy and establishing the precedent that freedom of speech and association are true American values.
