Story Pile: Girl Meets Rock!
I like to talk about anime and manga as completed units of story. I try where I can to talk about things that are done, or if they are not done, they are at a stopping point. I talked about Haikyuu before it was done, but I was done with Haikyuu. My Hero Academia kept going well after I kept reviewing it, and we are all the poorer for it. In the case of the ongoing manga Akane-Banashi, I feel that it worked really well as an ongoing regular reader that could get someone into reading more regular manga, and therefore it wasn’t that big a deal, and even if Akane-Banashi never sticks the landing, I think I’ll probably be pretty happy with it. Basically, Akane-Banashi is so good that you should read it anyway.
However, in this case, what I am going to talk about is almost the exact opposite of a distinct story. Girl Meets Rock! is a manga published in – oh. Well, this gets complicated. See, Girl Meets Rock! is a webmanga that ran from January to September 2023. Eight months. That was published in Jump Rookie!, and now it’s getting a remake published in Shonen Jump, written by Kuwahali and illustrated by Tetsuo Ideuchi, and has been going since January 2024, and is still going on. Which you might notice is more than eight months.
Yeah this one’s unfolding. The Girl Meets Rock! I read is a remake of a much shorter series and not only can I not find the original series to check how it ended, I haven’t even tried. Trust me, I didn’t even imagine it could be, because how could the manga I’m reading be an expansion of anything? It’s a story with the depth of a greeting card stand. I guess they needed to do a remake to ensure this webmanga about almost nothing got a lot more room to include all of the nothing.
No spoiler or content warning, we’re not going into anything meaningfully spoilery and this is not the kind of series where suddenly there’s I dunno, a Dracula.
