For my first #DecRecs, I want to recommend the anime classic, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (because I must start with my favourite, my forever fandom). Far off in the future, there's space monarchy based on Germany, and a space democracy based on the U.S., and they've been at war for years.
From MAL: "The 150-year-long stalemate between the two interstellar superpowers, the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance, comes to an end when a new generation of leaders arises: the idealistic military genius Reinhard von Lohengramm, and the FPA's reserved historian, Yang Wenli."
You'd think there's a lot of exciting space battles and all that but actually what you will be watching is a lot of talking. A lot, a lot of talking. People discussing the merits of democracy, benevolent dictatorship, inherited privilege, religion, the use of military, how history is recorded (it's all told from the pov of a future historian, technically, since the voice over always spoils the next events). Tbh space opera is not exactly the correct way to describe it though some characters are definitely quite dramatic. But also fair warning, there are lots and lots of character death (this is the fandom that celebrates both birthdays and death days).
If watching is not your thing, LoGH novels have been translated into English. All ten of them! (Okay quality varies but at least there's a translation). And if 110 ep OVA is too daunting and you prefer modern anime art, it has a remake Die Neue These (this is not a straight up remake of the original OVA, but a readaptation of the books). If you like manga, there's a manga (TWO!).
