I'd rather pay the added cost for some box certified for TrueNAS by iXsystems but then again I've also happily used an original Raspberry Pi Model B with USB HDDs and that was fast enough on minidlna and samba for being the "data landfill" to just dump shit on or pull stuff from.
Again: I can do #Ghettohacking too, I jist prefer to do things once and good that twice cuz I was forced to flextape a solution out of thin air.
