“I would say that a certain attitude about how to deliver news content is hopefully finally ending. And it’s a good thing. I, honestly, hope to God that we are done with trying to cram journalism-with-a-capital-J into spaces where it doesn’t belong. Based on everything I’m seeing, the only real option you have to is stop, plant you feet, and say, “fuck off, I’m making a website & I’m going to make it good enough that people will want to read it on purpose.”

“If Spotify feels the need to contort itself into yet another TikTok clone then I’m comfortable saying the entire technological project that is/was web 2.0 has been a tremendous failure.”

As someone who dislikes and doesn’t use Spotify, I transparently want this to go very poorly for everyone involved.

“Get yourself in a union and start figuring out how to protect your jobs. The bright side, or at least, the not super depressing side, about this is I think AI writing will probably create a bigger demand for voicier, opinionated, human writing. Maybe? But we’re about to lose A LOT of roles for professional writers.”

A grim but pragmatic forecast from Ryan Broderick/Garbage Day.

I sub to #GarbageDaySubstack because l'm old but still want to grok social media's effect on society at large without actually having to engage in it beyond searching reddit, group Signal chats and some Mastodon. I find it thoughtful, entertaining and the limit of effort I want to put in that direction.

Today I was heartened to learn of Gen Z's ironic embrace of the saluting-face emoji as all the ships go down 🫡 Also solid observations on what decentralized looks like.

@ryanbroderick Yeah, but I've been weirdly settling into that feeling in an affirming (I think) way. I feel secure in how slowly I'm taking it. The majority of those I'm following are still on the cool little instance of archaeologists and I'm veeerrry slooowly adding to that with naturalists painting watercolors of birds and various other idiosyncratic, worthwhile weirdos across the fediverse.

I'm a garbage day subscriber, btw, and glad to see you here.
