Inflation expectations rise before South Africa rate decision

South Africa’s two-year inflation expectations climbed,complicating the central bank’s efforts to anchor expectations around its 3% target. Average inflation expectations two years ahead, the measure the central bank closely watches when setting interest rates, rose to 3.9% in the second quarter from 3.6% previously, according to a survey published by the Stellenbosch-based Bureau for Economic Research on Tuesday.

Petrol, diesel prices to fall despite end of fuel levy relief

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has confirmed that petrol and diesel prices will decrease significantly from July 1, despite the phasing out of the short-term fuel levy relief implemented in recent months. Petrol 93 will decrease by R2.01 a litre and Petrol 95 by R1.96 a litre, while diesel (0.05% sulphur) will decrease by R3.14 a litre and diesel (0.005% sulphur) by R3.59 a litre. The DMPR notes that the short-term relief measures have been completely phased out and the full fuel levies of R4.29 a litre on petrol and R4.16 a litre on diesel will be reinstated from July 1.

IMF reaches staff-level deal with Egypt that could unlock $1.6bn

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Monday it had reached a staff-level agreement with Egypt on reviews of two financing arrangements, potentially unlocking about $1.6-billion pending approval by the fund's executive board. The agreement would make available about $1.5-billion under Egypt's Extended Fund Facility and about $136-million under the Resilience and Sustainability Facility, bringing total disbursements under the arrangements to about $7.2-billion, the IMF said.

Rights groups file complaint against Ghana over Trump deportations

Advocacy groups filed a complaint on behalf of people deported from the United States to Ghana by the Trump administration with the regional bloc representing West Africa, according to a statement released early on Tuesday. The complaint, known as an application for a case, was filed against Ghana before the Community Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States on behalf of 27 deportees, the statement said.

Kenya gets $750m in budget support from World Bank

The World Bank said on Tuesday that it had approved $750-million in budget support for Kenya to support reforms aimed at strengthening governance, public financial management and social protection for vulnerable citizens. The funding is known as a Development Policy Operation (DPO).

Kenya, Rwanda sign fuel import deal to boost supply security

Kenya and Rwanda signed three pacts on Monday setting up a government framework for Rwanda-bound fuel imports, the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) and Rwanda's Trade Ministry said in statements on X. The agreements comprise a memorandum of understanding, a tripartite agreement and a transport and storage agreement, setting up a government-to-government framework.
