Book review: ‘The Brothers Bishop’ by Bart Yates

Unpredictable, emotional, unsettling, relatable on many unexpected levels… Bart Yates’ debut novel is a wonderfully written piece of fiction dealing with the complexity of family history, identity and sexuality, written from the perspective of a deeply introverted man.

“The Brothers Bishop” turned out to be a perfect summer read for me, as I love books set in small towns with quirky and troubled characters. A lovely beach cottage on the sandy shore of the Atlantic Ocean serves as the background to dramatic, sexually-charged events triggered by the arrival of Nathan’s younger brother Tommy who’d left the town some years ago. Tommy brings along a group of friends who invade Nathan’s beach house, turning his lonesome, quiet life upside down. As it soon transpires, each one of the visitors came with a lot of baggage other than their suitcases. Old wounds are reopened, there’s a lot of bitchiness and resentment all around, mixed with genuine love and care. Then there are other people, Nathan’s students, as well as old family friends and foes who contribute to the story with their own additional, yet well linked narratives.

Both brothers have personal issues, to say the least. Nathan decided to stay in town, eventually becoming a high school teacher, seemingly content with living as a recluse. Tommy, on the other hand, left for the big city, changing jobs almost as frequently as his sexual partners. In spite of great differences between them, both go on living with memories of their late father’s cruel abusive behaviour towards them, and of their mother’s untimely death. Then there are things they did to and with each other: I don’t think the word “incest” was mentioned at any point in the book, but the Bishops as teenagers used to be all over each other. It’s interesting how the author normalizes it (perhaps even celebrates it, as an expression of the brothers’ defiance), while at the same time making it the underlying cause of subsequent tragic events. It’s the siblings’ original sin, as it were, tainting them for life. Love between the Bishops both binds and unravels, consoles and injures, liberates and oppresses. In other words, it’s genuine.

There’s depth to both of them—and the other characters as well. The author leaves no one in the book without a proper character treatment, not even the marginal figures. Their aspirations and disillusionments are something everyone can relate to. In that sense, it would be a mistake to treat this book solely as part of the gay fiction niche. It’s a well-written and refreshingly unpretentious piece of writing that easily gets all five stars from me.

I personally am okay with cheating….if you just admit you’ve been doing it and are like “you know I’m just not feeling it, and want to try something different”. Personally I’m non-monogamous because I’m so fucking territorial. Let’s get nasty, watch some Apple TV, knock a few back and then you go home. If you don’t tell me….then I rip,off your balls for shear dishonesty and insulting my intelligence. #glbt #relationhips
Some dude on Scruff "what do you do for a living?" programmer "Oh, I see. Well, I'm an entrepreneur and influencer" Oh, so do you write highly integrated back-end system software that has powered some of the most challenging problems and advised firms such as Boeing and the USAF? I'm available...for $65/hr. Good way to say 1) I'm a backend developer 2) fuck you and 3) on the horse your rode in on. #glbt #dating

I am talking to a #gay #FBI agent. Not quite a unicorn fart, but close. You don't see very many #GLBT agents out there. They're out there, they are, just like cops. But he says a lot of people are closeted because of this macho culture they have, that's even worse under #Trump . He's fascinating!! Like I said...almost a unicorn fart.
Some dudes are so full of themselves. On Scruff, I have a picture of me and my #cat because he's my best-friend, right? Some dude is like "if you want to hookup with me, then you have to loose the cat" oh. Well then, we won't be hooking up then. "😮 I'm worth it" bro, my cat is a psychiatric service animal. We're a package. That's like having someone get rid of their wheelchair. Seriously. #disability #glbt
There are #gay MAGAtwats? In what twilight zone dimension? How does that work exactly? My mother once said "I didn't raise a liberal" WHAT?! I'M GAY!! No. No you did not. I had to figure that all out myself. But that isnt voting against your own self interest. That's letting it first fuck you! #glbt #news

Guy on Scruff "What you doing?" Me: "Waiting for the melatonin gummies to kick in" "oh" "and the 2 Benedryl, and the Trazodone. So I'm waiting for someone to bore me to sleep, and you look like that person! What you doing?" Seriously. People in polite society start conversations with "hello! How are you?". Do #manners not matter anymore? Nevermind. I forgot who we have for a president as an example of classiness. Looks like the Trazodone kicked in after all. #glbt
Some guy on Scruff - "are you looking for Daddy?" Yes. I need to know where to send the hitman. The only daddy issue I have is "Murder on my Mind" by Kordell plays when someone mentions his name. Very much not looking for a daddy #glbt
