I have long been annoyed by the overabundance of American flags in daily American life. I think that it cheapens any possible sentiment, it turns patriotism into just another kind of plastic tchotchke.

The level of American-flag litter that we're living through now is surely the highest it's ever been. But I was surprised to note the mantelpiece decor in this mystery photo from my grandparents' stash. It looks like we've been waving our cheap miniature flags for a long time.

This youngster was in my late grandmother's photo stash. I don't know who it is, but I admire the photo. So many of my pictures of my own son at this age are a blur.
