Well you are right there are few opportunities to meet fortran developers that are fully focused in their research and are not interested in sharing their fortran knowledge.

While those interested in it are building the #fortranlang community. However, definitively modern fortran needs more spread to bring the word all that evolved language can do (apart to be speak with supercomputers 😌).

Which one is better (for a grad student, not a software developer)?

"While Fortran has long been the butt of the joke in IT departments the world over, in a curious twist of fate, it has seen a dramatic resurgence over the last few years. While the reasons for this are not exactly obvious (at least to us!), a few possible explanations are:"

#Fortran feels no hurry: it was in the TIOBE Index Top 20 for 9 months in 2021 (the year it went back), 5 months in 2022, and already 7 months in 2023. A total of 21 months on the last 33 months (starting from January 2021):

The #Fortranlang community is giving a new impulse:
https://fortran-lang.org/

And the Fortran 2023 standard should be published around October/November.

Well, Fortran is playing chess with Death for several decades now.

The more achieved tool of that #fortranlang community, created at the end of 2019, is fpm (Fortran Package Manager), inspired by Rust's cargo. It is both a package manager and a build system, now in version 0.7.
The community is rather small (910 users on the Discourse) but very active.
