Er war Mitglied der Hofkapelle Meiningen der Herzöge von Sachsen-Meiningen und wirkte in der Residenz und in Bad Liebenstein.

Sein vielseitiges kompositorisches Werk trug ihm die Bezeichnung "Meininger Mozart" ein.

A violin concerto written in 1925 by Benedict Silberman, premiered in 1950 and revived in 2022 by Nadia Wijzenbeek and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest led by Chloe Rooke. Silberman survived WWII and his career took a different turn, arranging and composing entertainment music for his radio orchestra.

Thought-terminating cliché on #forgottencomposers no.1: 'But some of these composers are forgotten because they wrote bad music, right?’ Not so. They may have written music in a style that was not 'en vogue', or they may have written in a genre that was in low esteem, or they may have written only chamber music, or they may have written mainly for their own performing practice, or they may have written too little, but almost all of them were skilled professionals.
