Here's my image inspired by the #FolktaleWeek prompt word, "Gate".

I thought about making it a picket fence with a gate, but they weren't popular until about a century after the period I'm setting my story in.

They were originally wooden tree trunk pikes. Yoicks. Brings whole new meaning to "good fences make good neighbors".

But then settled for a more magical mysterious sort of portal gate. It helped me imagine my variation of the Little Red tale in that sort of setting. Not sure this ultimately would end up being used, but it was a great exercise!

For the 2nd #FolktaleWeek2024 #FolktaleWeekGate I made a #linocut illustrating the Chinese legend of Longmen or The Dragon Gate atop a waterfall on a legendary mountain. According to folklore, many carp swim upstream in the mighty Yellow River, against the strong current, but few are brave or strong enough to make the jump over the waterfall where it cut through a cleft in the Longmen mountains. ๐Ÿงต1/n

Drawing directly on my block (and messing up the claws but you wonโ€™t see that when I am done) for the second #folktaleweek2024 prompt #folktaleWeekGate.

Maybe you know this one? A folktale about jumping carp, a gate and dragons ๐Ÿ‰ ๐ŸŸ
