I run the https://sunny.garden Mastodon server.

Move slowly and build things.

Expect photos of flowers, clouds, cats and other creatures I spot out walking, and sometimes Mastodon admin or -- very rarely -- game development.

In order to address the performance issues as soon as possible, I'm planning on migrating the peoplemaking.games server to new hardware tomorrow.

Based on my testing so far, copying the database off the old server is going to take a while, and it will have to be offline during that time, so I expect the server will be offline for approximately 6 hours, starting around the times listed below:

PDT May 28, 18:00
EDT May 28, 21:00
UTC May 29, 01:00
JST May 29, 10:00

Sorry for the extended interruption, but hopefully once this maintenance is complete, things should be a lot more stable and any remaining work should require minimal downtime.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll post further updates if there are any changes to the schedule.

Dire news...

It was brought to my attention that a few of the emojis on the server were not displaying correctly.

Emojis are case sensitive, and Mastodon allows multiple different cased versions to be registered in the system (eg. both :blobhaj_mlem : and :Blobhaj_Mlem : ) but in that situation, only one of them will show up in posts (apparently at random).

When I imported some emojis a while back, a few of them got duplicated in this way. I've removed the duplicate versions and the ones in the emoji picker should work now:
  :Blobhaj_Pumpkin_Face:

Unfortunately this will affect any past posts that used the removed versions, and those will no longer display: :blobhaj_shock:
:blobhaj_mlem:
:blobhaj_witch:

Please let me know if you run into any emoji in the picker that aren't displaying in posts, so I can check if it's the same issue

I've started working with @esdin to migrate peoplemaking.games to a new higher performance server, which should address server stability, improve performance, and reduce the cost to operate.

It will take a few days to set things up and migrate carefully, so in the meantime I've made a few configuration tweaks to the current server, which should hopefully smooth things out in the short term.

Hey PMG 👋

I’ve been struggling to keep up with maintenance of the instance and to tackle some of the stability issues we’ve been facing. But when things get hard, folks have a way of showing up to help.

Give a welcome to @brook aka @brook. I’m going to be handing off server ownership and Brook will be migrating us to the same setup used for sunny.garden, which he’s been running stably for years.

Your current mod and admin staff will still be here as well, and we’ll all keep you informed as this progresses.

Thank you for being a lovely community, and I’m happy we’ve found a path for continuation.

I wrote a program to lipsync the shipping forecast in a terminal window, and I have no regrets.

Living on the ground floor of an apartment building means things fall off the balconies above and land on our patio with some regularity. So far this has mostly been laundry clips and small toys. Once it was an entire blue tarp.

Today we woke up to find our patio covered in dirt. We thought it was the rain which can splash soil up from the garden, but it was a lot more than usual. Later we noticed a small pile of dirt on the beam that frames our patio (there is a metal grill overhead, to stop any large objects). Seems like a flower pot fell or tipped over from above and dumped out over our patio... at least most of the soil went into the garden!

Which reminded me, back when we lived in Burnaby we had a 2nd floor patio with nothing blocking things falling from balconies above... we got enough stuff falling onto it that I had a blog called Things I Find On My Patio. The last post was 15 years ago, but it's still up!

Well I've really been enjoying sitting out on the patio for the past couple of months, but it's mosquito season now, so no more of that I guess
