Fremantle Prison gains 'unique' documents about Catalpa captain

Captain George Anthony's family share historic documents detailing the life of the principled Quaker who was branded a pirate for his role in the Catalpa rescue.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1867, three #Fenians (i.e., members of the Irish Republican Brotherhood) were hanged in #Manchester. The #ManchesterMartyrs had attacked a #police van and accidentally killed one of the officers. Armed resistance to colonialism is a basic #HumanRight.

Charles Kickham, Fenian, novelist, and author of Knocknagow, was born in Mullinahone, Co Tipperary on 9 May 1828.

Knocknagow was widely popular in Ireland and the young Michael Collins was once found weeping over the sufferings of the peasantry in the novel.
