He's had his first breakfast, his second breakfast, and zoomies. He now is angling for a third breakfast. Sadly, he will be disappointed.

He's anticipating lunch........constantly!

At the vets for his first blood tests after the new oral diabetes treatment.
Butter wouldn't melt......however, once in the consultation room, he turned into a spitting, growling, snarling gremlin. They finally got bloods ( it took 2 vets, a nurse and a very large towel!)
So, his blood sugar, ketone and potassium are back to normal after only 4 weeks post diagnosis.
I am so relieved...

After being diagnosed with diabetes two weeks ago, his new oral medication seems to be working. He's brighter, putting some weight back (he lost 1.3 kg in a month), more active and demanding food constantly again. So far, no ketonuria (can be a side effect of this medication), so my fingers are firmly crossed.
Good boy, Copper.

The insulin and needles won't be the expensive part, as one vial will last two months on average. The bulk of the cost will come from repeated bloodwork panels to see whether the dose she's on is working for her, and this is what that'll look like at first.

First off, I want to thank everyone whose incredible kindness helped me pay for both Toby's and Immi's vet bills. Toby's came out to $254 and change (forgot to take a picture of that), Immi's came out to $434.39.

Based on what I told the vet, she speculated Immi might be diabetic, which I hadn't considered, and the bloodwork results confirmed it.

He was diagnosed diabetic yesterday and thinks this gives him carte blanche to receive food on demand. Tough love is required.

A few weeks ago, I noticed the Litter Robot my two cats use started going through a lot more litter than usual. I couldn't determine which of the cats was the culprit but they were both due for check-ups and vaccination boosters anyway so I hauled them both in to the vet last week.

Turns out, my super sweet cat, Oliver, had a UTI. Not great but, hey, problem solved... right? NOPE. Also turns out, my outgoing cat, Picasso, has diabetes.

The tests for both cats (blood, fecal, and urine), vaccinations for both cats, 10 days of UTI medication for Oliver, 42 days worth of insulin for Picasso, and an all-in-one package of 60 needles and a sharps container for Picasso came to $1077.85.

Oliver's treatment will be wrapped up in a couple of days. Picasso's medication and syringes will be an ongoing expense of ~$100 per month until his diabetes goes into remission (which is something that apparently can happen with cats but won't necessarily). The vet also advised us to switch Picasso to wet food because basically any wet cat food is lower carb than dry cat food. I can't segregate my cats for feeding, though, so now both are getting wet food exclusively which is gonna run us ~$90 per month.

I'm really fortunate that I am in a good enough financial position that I can manage these costs without too much stress. I do, however, worry about the additional low-dopamine tasks that have been added to my plate. I can just barely take care of myself many days and now, twice a day, I have to prepare food, prepare meds, inject a cat, and clean food dishes. There will also be less frequent tasks like managing recurring prescriptions, getting time off for more vet appointments, setting and going to those appointments, etc.

It's a lot but, one week into this new chapter of pet care, I am managing well so far. For his sake and mine, I am very strenuously hoping that Picasso's diabetes will go into remission soon but I have no sense of how likely that is. The first follow-up appointment is next week. Wish us luck!

Wolf Boom Zoom Trouble Infinity 5000 Army Tank is listening to the morning's news with me and shares my sense of existential dread.

Or maybe he's just very sad that he did not get any of the high carbohydrate kibble my former feral cat so enjoys.
