Great article on how Canada came to have the Fee and Dividend climate policy.
#climatepolicy #feeanddividend
Everyone in Ontario should be made aware of this carbon dividend(rebate) calculator website.
#feeanddividend
@lymphomation @kathhayhoe and the big problem that no one is talking about different rates of conversion to Low/Zero GHG, which with high probability will have significant adverse impacts on many vulnerable populations. Issues like landlord/tenant split incentives, financial resources to convert to renewable energy, physical infrastructure constraints. At the same time the large industries that are carbon intensive will convert on a fairly rapid schedule, meaning the pool for dividends gets small very quickly.
And I have not heard any of the #FeeAndDividend advocates respond to these concerns. They just tell me economists, and Noble winning economists, like it. Cf Nordhouse & Agricultural impacts of climate, recent critique about food availability vs Ag % of GDP criteria
It baffles me why conservative political actors in Canada have not embraced the #feeanddividend carbon policy. The fee provides direct market forcing toward carbon neutral consumption. The dividend provides bureaucracy free rewards to consumers who make good carbon choices. It is simple, fair and minimizes government need to choose winners.

From the onset of the post-COVID surge in inflation, Canada’s new breed of right-wing populists has worked hard to pin the blame for higher prices on the federal government. They rightly sense anger about the impact of inflation on their living standards. But they hope to divert that anger into outrage at Justin Trudeau personally, and his government more generally.
