An AP photographer shares the stories behind some of her Gaza images

AP photographer Fatima Shbair tells the stories behind some of her most poignant images from covering the war in her homeland, Gaza. For months, Shbair covered grieving families in morgues, the aftermath of Israeli airstrikes and wounded people being rushed to hospitals. At the same time, she faced the displacement of her own family from Gaza City and the loss of friends, colleagues and loved ones. Her images and words point to the trauma that two years of war have instilled in Palestinians, and their efforts to survive amid Israel’s offensive aimed at destroying Hamas. In April 2024, Shbair and her family were able to leave Gaza, and today she is based in Dubai for AP.
