Visitor trip vessel 'Archimedes' and a narrow boat being lifted in a gondola at the Falkirk Wheel, Falkirk, Scotland. (2026.05.27)
The Falkirk Wheel boat lift connects the Forth & Clyde Canal with the (higher) Union Canal. There are two gondolas, which balance each other as they rotate up or down; each carries 200 tons, the combined weight of the water and any boats floating thereon.

The Engineering Of The Falkirk Wheel

We live in an age where engineering marvels are commonplace: airplanes crisscross the sky, skyscrapers grow like weeds, and spacecraft reach for the stars. But every so often, we see something unus…

Hackaday
So windy today that the #FalkirkWheel was closed early such that the last tour was cancelled, and the last hire boat had to park at the bottom instead for the night.

The Falkirk Wheel is a mechanical boat lift that was built for the Millennium. It replaced a flight of 11 locks that originally joined the Union Canal to the Forth & Clyde Canal. It is a very impressive structure, and well worth a visit.

Engineering at its most magnificent. The unique and uniquely beautiful Falkirk Wheel rotary boat lift opened in 2002. It fulfils a role originally accomplished by a flight of 11 locks when the Union Canal opened in 1822. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/falkirk/falkirkwheel/index.html
