I have just released a small #RustLang library for running commands as root as an unprivileged user - aka #rootless. 🦀

https://crates.io/crates/rootless-run/0.1.0

It has been created in the context of the #ALPM project to allow running commands using #fakeroot or #rootlesskit and paves the way for a simple Rust-based implementation.

In the future we plan to use it in the ALPM project to run commands that require root as unprivileged user.

I know it's been done before but I decided to make a simple set of package management tools for my #LFS / #BLFS build. I'm just calling it Pkgtools even though I think #Slackware calls theirs that too (I guess I'm open to suggestions.

They're just simple bash scripts and will end up being a #Fakeroot solution backed by an #SQLite database but I'm excited about the whole process

When #proprietary vendor #software seems to be an unpacking #chaellenge:

They present you with 4 archives in a tar.gz in a shell script in a tar archive to be extracted with some (32bit) #tclkit based scripts. And of course they bundle Java with their IDE. Oh dear..

#Microchip should be avoided.

Also see https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=microchip-mplabx-bin for a lightweight #hackaround, pragmatically puting the #crap in a #fakeroot.
