The future of interactive preprints and papers were on display (especially the openRxiv labs and Curvenote previewa) at the #FORCE2026 @force11 conference in Singapore, and here I discuss what was presented and what the future of "living figures" might hold

I've written up my thoughts on last weeks brilliant #FORCE2026 @force11 conference in Singapore:

FORCE at 15: The Jagged Frontier of Scholarly Communication Reaches Asia

Was great to meet a RIO author at the #FORCE2026 conference. Mochammad Tanzil Multazam published a Research Idea on "GO-PUB: Open-Select-Submit" - proposing a ride-hailing style app (inspired by GO-JEK in Indonesia) that connects authors with journals. https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.5.e47232

I'm now finishing the last morning of FORCE2026 (https://force11.org/force2026/) in Singapore, and am looking forward to DataCite Connect Singapore 2026 this afternoon. Reflecting on people paying close attention to interesting talks, here's a Buffy Fish-Owl from Hampstead Wetlands Park in northern Singapore, one of the many pretty birds I've seen here.

That went fast. Closing #FORCE2026 remarks now from conference host and co-Chair Bella Ratmelia from SMU. Seeing myself from the organising committee, Bella and the local team did an incredible job. The @force11 meeting was in very safe hands and it really felt a like lot of the original "Beyond the PDF" energy was back
Final keynote at #FORCE2026 from Ginny Barbour on "Publishing in 2026: How we got into such trouble and how we get out of it". Discussing how scholarly norms and processes are breaking down (peer review overload, AI-generated papers) and how we need to equip academics for a new world
This week, ROR representatives are at the #FORCE2026 conference in Singapore discussing how ROR can help ensure research integrity. Find us at the 9am Friday session! https://force11.org/force2026/
Michelle Barker presenting now at #FORCE2026 on ReSA - the Research Software Alliance, and organisation helping better integrating research software into open scholarship. Plugging their first International Research Software Conference #IRSC2026 in Sheffield in September

Phew, that's my third and final session at #FORCE2026 over. Just finished an interactive BoF with @danielskatz discussing the challenges of AI+software+ethics with a great audience. This covered the issues outlined in our Scholarly Kitchen guest post https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/08/28/guest-post-code-plagiarism-and-ai-create-new-challenges-for-publishing-integrity/
Really thought provoking #FORCE2026 keynote from @IanMulvany. Interesting to hear about the concept of the "jagged frontier" of AI ability, and where it sits and moves against collective human ability frontier https://www.oneusefulthing.org/p/the-shape-of-ai-jaggedness-bottlenecks
