Looking around YouTube, I found this video with a strategy for Gil Turtle which I hadn't considered before. On Super Famicom (I have not tested on GBA), put reflect rings on 3 characters and an ice shield on the last, then target the party with ice spells. 3 reflected ice spells are still stronger than splitting the damage among 2 targets and because you "hit" your party it doesn't trigger the counter-attacks, not even the final attack.

I opted for HP+30% on Lenna and Faris, while Krile used Equip Bows to help out with trying to get darkness on Exdeath's first form and used the Artemis Bow against the Almagest part in case Bartz couldn't land Catoblepas. It took a few more tries, but with !Dualcast they went by about the number of turns as during the Classic Jobs run with the less-accurate Break spell. Neo Exdeath did get to cast Grand Cross once, but only after I passed a damage threshold to skip the first. It was a bit more annoying than usual, with Krile zombified and Bartz berserked. Fortunately, Golem doesn't block damage when you attack your own party, so I could KO and revive to clear that.

That's it for my first Onion Jobs run and my Four Job Fiesta runs for this year. I'm glad I chose Fifth Job since I got to combine Ranger with Monk and keep things more interesting by getting rid of Black Mage.

I went through Great Sea trench after all because I could complete a set of flame rings with the one in there. Also, !Summon just lets me use Zantetsuken on the encounters (and the boss battle), but I mostly used lots of Thunderstorm.

Not much to say about the Interdimensional Rift, other than I forgot that Halicarnassus reacts to summons with a 6,000 damage hit. I decided to fight Movers to max out jobs for most characters. Krile's not done with Red Mage, but I'd rather just conclude, so I went ahead and fought Shinryu. Dark Bow, Mirage Vests, Protect and staying in the back row all combine well, but !Summon means I can also avoid damage with Golem. My Summoner was using !Dualcast Syldra, my Red Mage used !Rapid Fire Chicken Knife, my Ranger got all four initial hits with !Rapid Fire Yoichi Bow to crit, and even my Monk was doing 300 - 650 damage per hit with !Rapid Fire and fists.

Before getting Mirage Vests, I did nearly everything else in World 3. The only place I didn't go to was Great Sea Trench; all it has is a Kaiser Knuckle and with !Rapid Fire I don't need to overcome defense. Ranger or Red Mage can have !Focus and use the Chicken Knife if I need to pick out one un-petrifiable target from multiple, and after getting 100 ABP from each of the 5 Magic Pots, 50 from Gogo, 25 from Bahamut, and 20 each from Odin, Minotaur, Omniscient, and Leviathan my options are very open for each character. Bartz is the only one with !Dualcast, but everyone else has mastered Ranger.

I went for 4 Staff of Light(s), and in the process ended up roughly 40 ABP away from learning !Rapid Fire, so I just kept going. It's deceptively good on a Monk, because the individual unarmed attacks are only ~250 damage, but there are 8 of them and each has the chance for a critical hit. They also don't miss, but your Monk won't be doing much damage to the back row of an enemy formation. Getting hit by Gilgamesh's Discord really drops the damage, though. Still, Lenna punching was mostly how I defeated Exdeath, although I broke 2 staves for over 5,000 damage each. Reflect from Carbuncle only wore off at a bad time once, and I was able to combine it with Golem and Protect. Oh, and the Black Warlocks dropped 3 more Power Staff(s) than I wanted, so after I get Hermes Sandals and Mirage Vests I'll be prepared for Shinryu. I would need to really over-level and get a lot of elixirs to try Omega.

Monk also means that this is the end of not running away from battles. By the time Krile joined, Faris got to level 30 and everyone else was level 29.

Monk also upsets my leveling plans a bit. Faris was Summoner using !Black 6; the only ability from a different job she has is !Animals, so she'll be swapping with Bartz as Red Mage and I'll take a bit longer to get !Dualcast. I could just make Krile the Monk, but since Lenna will be gone for the Pyramid of Moore and Krile wouldn't normally have Equip Bows by World 3, now I'll be spending some time in the Castle Bal basement. Gonna want !Focus for the Chicken Knife, though.

I opted to try for a little bit for Reflect Ring drops, and they came quickly, so I got my 4 and then used them to blast Atomos. I did not stop for Staff of Light rare drops in Ghido's Cave (but got 1 anyway). Forest of Moore and guardians went quickly (Fire took 1 shot with Killer Bow, Air took 2). I had about half the ABP needed for !Rapid Fire on Lenna and thought, "too bad I'm getting rid of it." However, my Fifth Job is Monk. This is only the second time I've had Monk outside of a Classic Jobs run, with the other at the start of an Upgrade run.

If I keep Ranger, it will complement Monk in a few ways. Ranger benefits from HP+30% or Barehanded, while Monk needs Equip Bows (just use Elven and Artemis bows to make it worthwhile). Which spellcaster job do I replace, then? I'm keeping Summoner, as this is only my 2nd run with it ever. Red Mage stays for !Dualcast. Bye bye, !Black + Reflect Rings.

I'm at the Barrier Tower, where I normally try for rare drop Reflect Rings, but Summoner means I could skip those if I use Carbuncle from Exdeath's Castle. On the other hand, reflecting !Black spells off of four party members increases the damage against a single target, and the next opportunity to get Reflect Rings isn't until Phoenix Tower with the Thief Knife. Getting rings now would also make it easier to get the Blood Sword out of the monster-in-a-box, although I would need Knight to be the Fifth Job for that to make much difference. I'm still treating this is as a potential Brave Blade run, for which I might want to keep Ranger. Even if I don't get Knight, !Rapid Fire (but not !Aim) would prevent fleeing with the Chicken Knife. Decisions, decisions...

I finished World 1. My fourth job is Ranger, which is considerably better in FF5 than in FF3. The other possibilities were Ninja or Dragoon, and of those two I would have slightly preferred Dragoon for equipping a shield and !Lance. I suppose I can go for early !Rapid Fire on the way to !Dualcast, but Ranger is the job I'm most likely to replace for Fifth Job; !Black gives me better single-target damage for the same elements while !Summon gives great multi-target damage. I even summoned Fat Chocobo while fighting the last form of Archeoaevis for about double the damage Bartz as a Red Mage could do with the Ancient Sword.

Gilgabot does know I like Red Mages, but after Karnak I now also have Summoner, so I effectively have the other definition of the kick mage. I had already defeated Shiva, but I still needed to backtrack for the 3 purchasable spells: Chocobo, Remora, and Sylph. It occurs to me that the ability for !Summon to not have the damage split among multiple targets is wasted in the next dungeon, with its unhide-the-next-monster gimmick. Ifrit is also slightly lower attack power than Fira, so mechanically it's a little silly that's what the possessed books fear.

I've had Bartz and Galuf each take a turn at Red Mage, so they can have at least some healing while using either Black Mage or Summoner and benefit from a better magic value. I had originally intended to train just Bartz to get !Dualcast a bit earlier, but I didn't expect to be assigned 2 jobs which can benefit from it. Will my Fifth Job be White Mage?
