Say NO to massive industrial saltworks at Exmouth Gulf wetland

International industrial corporation K+S wants to build a giant #saltworks – the size of nearly 12’000 MCG footy ovals – on the eastern side of #ExmouthGulf, #Ningaloo, over an undeveloped, nationally listed #wetland. The company is seeking environmental approval to build its project.

The project would involve the construction of massive, artificial salt ponds with levee walls dozens of kilometres long;

A marine survey of Exmouth Gulf reveals unexpected black coral and healthy reefs, prompting calls for protection

Last month, the turbid waters in Exmouth Gulf cleared to reveal a wonderland of undamaged black corals and healthy reefs, but marine scientists are worried the area will miss out on protection.

❌ INDUSTRIAL PROJECT THE SIZE OF A CITY PROPOSED

International corporation K+S is asking for government approval to build an industrial saltworks in eastern #ExmouthGulf. Our map shows how huge the project is compared to the city of #Sydney - it’s the size of nearly 12,000 MCG footy ovals!

If the Government approves the application, the #saltworks would be built over nationally listed #wetlands that play a vital role in delivering nutrients to the #Gulf.

This industrial activity would be over a Wetland of National Importance, listed as an outstanding example of a tidal #wetland system, with well-developed tidal creeks and extensive #mangrove systems.

This proposal is completely inappropriate. We can’t risk #ExmouthGulf ’s globally significant environment through industrial development like this salt project.

However, #ExmouthGulf is under threat of industrialisation.

We need to act now to protect this special place which is a rare beacon of hope in a world facing a #BiodiversityCrisis, with critical declines in #MarineSpecies and the risk of further #extinctions.

#ExmouthGulf is a diverse and globally significant environment. It has strong ecological connections with the renowned #Ningaloo Coast World Heritage Area, and is known as ‘Ningaloo’s nursery’.

The Gulf is a stronghold for threatened marine species, including #dugongs, #MantaRays, #turtles, #dolphins and #sawfish. It is also a critical resting and nursing area for one of the world’s largest #HumpbackWhale populations.
